This comes to you directly from Shirley Dye, member of our PUSD School Board:
NOTICE: There is a program being considered for Payson Unified School District called “Capturing Kids Hearts” by the Flippen Group. There will be a presentation of this program to the Payson School Board on Monday March 11th, at 5:30 pm. Research into this program shows that it sounds really good presented by a rah rah motivational speaker, but has some definite drawbacks. The cost to train the teachers to Capture Kids Hearts is $20,000 plus about $65,000 in teacher in-service salaries. Could it be that with the economic outlook so tenuous, that this year (next year’s budget expense) is not a good time to plan for a feel good program when the students are failing to meet language, math and science scores? I am representing the taxpayers and a number of teachers who have not been consulted on this, who feel it is being forced on to them along with all the Common Core techniques and Teacher Evaluation requirements.
There is still a short time to write the Arizona Senators in opposition to the Common Core Standards being implemented in AZ. Contact information is included in the link below, along with various arguments. There are a number of reasons that this is a bad idea for the children of AZ but first and foremost, the Constitution of the United State does not include implementation of national education standards in the 20 enumerated powers limited to Congress. The tenth Amendment states that “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” In addition, the State of Arizona Constitution states that it is their responsibility for the education of its children. (This argument also applies to Medicaid Expansion.) Please write all the senators, or at least the ones in Committee asking them to at least delay voting on the implementation of Common Core Standards until further research can be compiled by States that have implemented it, and the PARCC Testing can be developed and reviewed. Please read the article in the link below.
