    Here's a direct quote:

The people of Arizona kept their upper lips stiff when officials mortgaged off the state’s executive office tower and a “Daily Show” crew rolled into town to chronicle the transaction in mocking tones. They remained calm as lawmakers pondered privatizing death row.”

But then the state took away their toilets, and residents began to revolt.”

“Why don’t they charge a quarter or something?’” said Connie Lucas, who lives in Pine, Arizona. “There was one rest stop between here and Phoenix, and we really needed it.”

We don't get much good press, do we?

If you are talking about the rest stop at the intersection of 87 and 188 there is Jakes Corner less than two miles to the SE and Rye about 5 miles to the N. If you can't wait that long you shouldn't be traveling.

I heard that that one was closed Pat. I was commenting on all rest stops which are being closed on Interstates across the state.

Are the rest stops on the interstates run by the state or the federal government? The rest stop between Phoenix and Payson on Highway 87 has been closed for a long time.

It was Connie Lucas from Pine that commented on the rest stop on the Beeline.
The one on the Beeline has been closed for a long time because of a bad design on the sewer system. Has nothing to do with the others that are being closed. It has never been open for a full year since it was built.
State engineers or architects at work?
At least the restrooms didn't explode and burn like two at Roosevelt Lake. (:

Heard the old story about the alien ship that took 103 years to cross the galaxy and at last reach the Earth in search of the source of our radio signals?

It landed on JFK at six in the morning, and out of six separate exits poured the aliens, nearly 3,000 of them. Out of every alien throat came the same cry.

    Pat,
You are correct about why the rest area is closed…a septic treatment plant that doesn't work.
That would be an engineer problem , not an architect :)
Rye is only open on Thurs.,Fri.,and Sat. and has a big sign next to the front door that reads…restrooms for customers only.
Jakes Corner ask the Hwy. Dept. if they could put up a sign telling people there were public restrooms ahead and were told no.
There are always cars parked along the road in the area of the rest area using the natural facilities….bushes.

    Rex,
I am always right or close. (:
Did you know there is an office at the NW end of the building at the rest stop that DPS uses?
I am so full of trivia and must share it.
Are you an architect or engineer? You have to be one or the other. Right?
If you need to stop at Rye, buy a pack of gum. That makes you a customer.
Besides being right, and full of trivia I am also devious.

    You want devious?

    Try this:

A long time ago I went back to New York City where I was born for a visit and got annoyed with all the places that said, “Restrooms for customers only.”

That was way back when I was a teenager, but I was as devious back then as I can be now if I have to be. I would just walk in, ask for something I was certain they didn't have, get a no, and go use the restroom.

    Worked every time.

    Pat,
I'm an architect. My office is in the new building at 405 W. Main , which I designed and Reese built.
I've seen one of the owners of Rye actually confront people coming out of the restroom about not being a customer and seen them do exactly what you said…I would bet they don't come back for dinner…ever.
As for devious…..I don't think so….you pretty much let everyone know where you stand
    I like that !

You're right there, Rex. What a narrow minded thing to do. How does it harm them to provide a small service for passing people? I wonder if they've ever heard of PR? In fact, just this conversation we are having right here on the blog will inevitably cost them customers. Me, for one.

In case no one ever mentioned it, the Roundup forums get over 100,000 hits a month. A lot of people read, but don't comment.

    Tom,
It is not my intent to hurt business at Rye. One of the owner's is a very nice person whom I consider a friend. The other owner just has this “thing” about the restrooms. The food and service are good…the atmosphere is friendly. On Thurs.,Fri.and Sat.evenings you can eat ,relax, enjoy music, or take dance lessons. There are usually a bunch of characters…like myself and Don Garven…sitting around the bar having friendly conversation and solving the world's problems….we think.
Garven tells stories about Rye's past . One is: In 1976 a tornado hit Rye, it did $150,000 worth of…………improvements !

No doubt, Rex. Not mine either. But someone down there would be wise to consider how people feel about things like that. What does it hurt after all if a few people stop in to use the restroom? Businesses are always trying to get people to drop in. There you go! An easy way to do it.

Maybe they could put up a sign that says, “If you can't leave your money here, you are welcome to leave…period!”

At least it's funnier than the sign they have now.
