I was so relieved to see that Home Rule was indeed supported by the voters! A big thank you to the voters of Payson for supporting Home Rule!

Using the Fire Dept and police was a big scare tactic to get thier way.
Now they can take over the Natural Bridge and things will go on as usual.
Waterfalls, ASU, more unneeded free entertainment and baby sitting. Along with a few more roundabouts, enlarge the library.
Streets will stay the same.
Still Friends ? (:

The old against everything crowd lost again as far as the Over ride and Home rule. Thank goodness for people that want good schools and a great city ran by good people.

Of course, we all know that the school budget override was “for the children,”
:{o)
But it's the school administrators who will be rubbing their hands with glee!
SEVEN years, folks. And it STILL won't be enough!
It never is.

The scare tactic usually works quite well. I saw it used in San Diego. The council wanted to have a ball stadium built at taxpayers expense. They urged a yes vote in order to prevent the teams leaving San Diego for some other stadium already built. It worked. Tax bills went up and the sports people were very happy.

If Home Rule had not passed it would have been devastating to the Town, not just for Police and Fire but for every department. Just look at what is going on in Tucson right now. Over 100 Firefighters in danger of losing their jobs and pay cuts. The recent furloughs here cost some town employees 17% of their wages and it was a big hit! Chief thanks for your support post! Pat we're still friends. I sure wish I knew where the 3.65 million that the Bridge brought into Rim Country went? Does anyone have an idea……..in fact if it did indeed bring in that much money would Payson be in such a bad place right now?

Barbara,
Someone on the radio said the other day he wasn't sure where the figures came from. I think it was a council member.
Could it be there are no figures? Do the business people ask all customers, are you passing thru to see the Natural Bridge and write down how much they spent? I don't think so.
It is someone's wild guess. Count the people that go to the Bridge and multilply by x amount of dollars. Another figure that can be screwed anyway you want it.
I would like to know how many local people have seen the Bridge.
I lived here and never saw it until I was 16.
My husband was 44 yrs old before he ever saw the Grand Canyon.
So much for tourist attractions.

Barbara, you're right. Tucson is a perfect example. There was never any scare tactics involved in the home rule issue, it was reality. Just like most private employers and employees, the town employees and our hero first responders have already taken a huge hit on their income along with the general fund budget cut to the bone. Just imagine the impact if we were not allowed to control our own budgeting process.
Fortunately, over 71% of the voters were smart enough to recognize the importance of this issue.
Just as amazing is the 67% that voted to support our children's education. Taxes are a difficult thing to swallow in good times, but there are certain things for which we need to step up to the plate. Education is a pay as you go process, just like social security. Others paid for my education and my children's education and helping with my grandchildren. Others paid for my parents social security and I in turn am paying for others. Does it hurt to see that big social security deduction come off my paycheck? You bet it does, but that's how the system works.
I have confidence that because of the excellent education system we enjoy, future generations will obtain good paying jobs and, one day, support my social security needs. Here's hoping anyhow.

I am so thankful for the voters who supported Home Rule. John thank you for your post. I agree 100% no scare tactics but cold hard facts. I just did some quick math. The number of voters voting was 5,123, 224 write in votes, Mayor got 3,826 votes so that leaves 1,073 people who didn't even vote for Mayor! I find this so very, very interesting! Maybe they couldn't find the box to check!

No Barbara, we wanted him to know there were people out here who can see thru him.
I saw the box and also the write in line.
As I said in an earlier post we will probably have a water fall etc. but watch and see how many firemen are going to get thier regular pay back. After all they say they are going to build a new station and that means more firemen, where is thier pay coming from?
You know from my earlier posts thru the yrs. Firemen are my first heroes.
Who is first at an emergency? Who gives life saving aid on the spot? Who goes to school and gets more training to save lives by becoming paramedics? Who does exercise to keep themselves in shape to do thier jobs? firemen thats who !

Okay Pat you read between the lines in my post…..hopefully the Firefighters will get their pay back and their uniform allowance too! As far as the new station goes who knows? I think the waterfall idea is a big joke and have you seen the sandbar that is growing in the small lake? Too much money spent by this Town on non-vital services as far as I am concerned! The “Park” at the corner of Main St., fireworks for the 4th of July, and on and on! And as far as the Bridge goes, if it truly brings in the monies they say it does why is the State going to close it? Seems to me keeping it open is a win win situation!

I don't like reading between the lines, too easy to misunderstand. However, this line has me scratching my head!
“The number of voters voting was 5,123, 224 write in votes, ”
Are you sure about that number, over 5 million write in votes?

I went down under the bridge once and swore never again. I was only 16 and in good shape.
Found out years later there is a back way down that isn't so steep.
Celebrated one New Year's Eve up in the bar and it was beautiful. Snowing and you could see it falling all around you. Kinda spooky when the snow is falling down past you. Spent the night in the lodge. Don't Drink and Drive !
The name Candlelight sounds familiar but can't think of where it is located.

Dean,
If you want information about the Bridge Carl is a real good source as his, him, or he and Rony's family owned it for many years and then Carl and someone else owned it.
The Candlelight started out as The Cowboy Corral, owned by Howard Childers who was deputy sheriff here for many yrs. It was much smaller and as it was sold people kept adding on to it.
Shore is purty now ! (:
Couldn't make up my mind which word to use in the first sentence.
