Members of the Tonto Rim Search and Rescue Squad were called out Sunday evening when it was reported that Flagstaff hunter Jim Milton failed to return to his campsite that day.

According to rescue squad Commander Mike Taylor, Milton and a friend were camping near Sharp Creek while hunting.

"Milton was due back at the camp by noon, but failed to return," Taylor said.

Fifteen members of the search squad spent the night looking for Milton. A helicopter from the Department of Public Service was expected to join the search in the morning.

"Before DPS could get up here, Milton was found mighty cold, but uninjured," the commander said. "He had gotten lost, and by nightfall, tried to build a fire but couldn't get it going. Instead, he just hunkered down under a tree and waited for morning to come."

At sunrise, Milton made his way back through the forest and was found by rescuers about a mile from his camp.
