A Strawberry woman and her 5-year-old granddaughter were sent to the hospital Tuesday after a rollover accident on Fossil Creek Road.

The granddaughter was treated and released from Payson Regional Medical Center. Her grandmother was transported by air to Scottsdale Memorial Hospital for observation and was released Thursday morning.

According to sheriff's deputies, the woman, Virginia Benadiaz, was driving her brother's vehicle at 2:15 p.m. when she hit a patch of ice and swerved into a ditch, hit an embankment and rolled the vehicle on its side.

"The woman was pinned behind the wheel, and the girl was standing up in the car wanting somebody to get her out of there," said Reserve Deputy Bob Bonney. Emergency personnel were able to free the woman, who Bonney said kept slipping in and out of consciousness.

The child received only minor bumps and bruises, and was home with her parents later that afternoon.

Bonney said the accident is still under investigation.
