Payson Elks Public Relations Director Frank Patch is projecting 150 youngsters ages 8-13 could pack Rim Country Middle School gym when registration for the annual BPOE Hoops Shoot opens at 8 a.m. Dec. 5.
"If the words gets out, the kids will show up," Patch said.
Participants must bring proof of age with them to the registration. The young hot shots will then be grouped for the competition according to their age as of April 1, 1999.
Following the one-hour registration, the free shoot will begin and continue until about noon.
In the competition, each child will be given 25 free throw attempts from the regulation line. Those in the younger age groups, 8 and 9 years, shoot from a shorter distance.
The participants who make the most free throws in each age group will advance to the Elks District Hoop Shoot to be held in Flagstaff or Sedona next month.
Winners there can advance to state, regional and ultimately national competition.
Names of the National Champions, Patch said, will be inscribed in the Elks National Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
According to Elk officials, more than three million youngsters compete in the Hoop Shoot each year.
