A 340-acre forest fire on the Mogollon Rim was doused this weekend by a storm that dropped more than an inch of rain on the Rim country.
The fire started on the Apache-Sitgreaves Forest and burned west onto Promontory Butte -- a prominent outcropping about 20 miles northeast of Payson -- Nov. 24. By Nov. 27 it had burned nearly 200 acres.
Fire crews cleared fire lines to the west and south of the blaze, boxing the fire between natural barriers to the east and north until the rain extinguished the blaze Saturday afternoon.
Forest officials are uncertain precisely how and where the fire started.
