The Payson Grays came up a couple of runs short of a winning record in last weekend's Rim Country Invitational Champions Tournament.

Grays pitcher Ron Maksymowski said the Payson seniors team lost a pair of games by one run, leaving the squad with a 1-5 record for the weekend against a tough slate of eight other teams.

"We had a good time," Maksymowski said Monday. "We were (competitive) in four ballgames, and lost two in the seventh inning. We held our own.

"We had a lot of fun, and we were competitive."

Tournament director Dave Crowell of Payson called the nine-team competition "a complete success."

A total of eight over-the-fence home runs, plus numerous inside-the-park homers, were enjoyed by a nice crowd of local fans who came out to see the tournament, Crowell said.

In the round robin competition on Saturday, the Arizona Blasters of Phoenix ended up the number one seed, followed by the Fountain Hills Falcons, the Prescott Miners, the Apollo One Team from Phoenix and the Payson Grays, in the "A" Division.

In the "B" Division round robin, the All-Stars from Phoenix earned the number one seed, followed by Prescott 60's, Fountain Hills Cougars, and the Baja 60's from Green Valley.

On Sunday in the double elimination tournament, the Apollo One team won the "A" Division championships, with second place going to the Arizona Blasters and third place to the Fountain Hills Falcons. The Prescott Miners and the Payson Grays rounded off the standings.

In the "B" Division, the first-place points were divided between the All-Stars of Phoenix and the Prescott 60's. Crowell said developing winds, cooler late afternoon temperatures and having to play a late game forced both managers to agree to splitting first and second place points in the Championship Series Tournament.

The Cougars of Fountain Hills took third place, followed by the Baja 60's.

"Overall, we had a good tournament," said Crowell, who plays on the Fountain Hills Falcons team.

The second tournament in the three-tournament Payson series will be played here May 1 and 2.
