Tell It, Hear It Like It Is At The Showcase

Payson's 7th Annual Business Showcase offers Rim country consumers a double opportunity this Saturday.

For one, you'll be able to get a good sense of what local businesses have to offer, all at one place. Seventy-eight local merchants will have displays set up under the big tent at the Wal-Mart parking lot from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Booths will display their products and services, and you'll have many chances to win prizes provided by exhibitors as part of their involvement with the showcase.

Secondly, you'll have the chance to chat with entrepreneurs and their employees about how they do business in the Rim country. This is an educational opportunity, sure to enlighten both merchants and customers.

There are many challenges to operating a business in a relatively remote rural area. At times, we hear from individuals who complain about unfairly inflated prices. That's certainly true in some cases, but not all, and local business managers as a whole should not be labeled as greedy opportunists.

The business showcase is a perfect opportunity to get to know the people who run local businesses and to ask them the hard questions and tell them your concerns. They'll learn from you about your frustrations and interests, and you may discover the pressures that cause businesses to operate the way they do.

We at the Roundup interact closely with hundreds of local businesses, and we would be lying to you if we said that every one of them seemed fair and responsible in the prices and services they offer. There are some we wouldn't patronize if you paid us. However, we can truthfully say there are many wonderful businesses that we would recommend to our best friends. These are run by business owners and managers with high integrity and honesty.

None of us like our behavior to be misjudged by others who do not understand the reasons behind our actions. The same is true for businessmen.

Take advantage of Saturday's showcase to have a real conversation with local business people about whom you have reservations.

And don't forget to pass a good word along to those who have done you right.
