85 Years For Child Molester

Donald Allen Ostman of Tonto Village was sentenced Monday in Gila County Superior Court for the molestation of a 10-year-old Payson girl.

Ostman, 50, will spend the next 85 years behind bars, according to Deputy County Attorney Patti Wortman.

Payson Police Det. Chris Haack began investigation of the allegations in March 1998 when school officials reported the confession of the little girl that her mother's boyfriend raped her.

During the interview, Haack said the girl admitted that Ostman touches her in her "privacy places," and detailed the abuse she said she suffered for the past three years.

Ostman was arrested March 6, 1998 at his Tonto Village home.

While the victim's mother told detectives she had no idea the abuse was taking place, the child was placed in foster care.

Following a four-day trial in Globe --which included testimony from his victim -- Ostman was found guilty of four counts of child molestation, one count of sexual molestation of a child, and two counts of furnishing obscene or harmful objects to a child.

"The judge reminded him that upon his release, he will have to register as a sex offender," Haack said Thursday.

Wortman said she was satisfied with the sentence, but admits she couldn't have predicted the outcome.

"Many of the charges could have had sentences run concurrent," she said. "The judge opted to run the sentences consecutively, which added up to 85 years."

Ostman's attorney, Robert Cimino of Apache Junction, was unavailable for comment.
