Members of the Payson Men's Golf Association are locking horns in the annual club championship tournament which began Wednesday and will continue with weekly play until mid-September.
In addition to the club tournament, 22 PMGA members traveled north Aug. 24 to participate in an intraclub match with the Prescott Country Club Men's Golf Association.
As usually occurs in intraclub meets, the homestanding PCCMGA players took advantage of their familiarity with the course to win three of the four closest to the pin contests.
Only Payson's Vick Kostecki pocketed prize money for the visitors, finishing 9 feet, 10 inches away on the 165-yard, par 3, third hole.
In A flight tournament action for Payson players, Jack Inman, with an 80, was the low gross champion. In low net play, Dick Hardin (69) was first and Frank Szakal (70) the runner-up.
Among the B flight crew, Tom Harris finished with a 92 and as the champion of the low gross scoring. Don Nicholas and Armond Werle carded identical scores of 70 and tied for low-net honors. In a score-card playoff, Nicholas was declared top gun and Werle No. 2.
