Fledgling elementary and middle school wrestlers who have not earned first-line status on their teams will have the opportunity to shine at the Second Annual Chance Amon Memorial "Battle of the Upstarts" tournament.

The fray begins at 9 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday) in the old Payson High School gym and continues "until the fat lady sings," says tournament director Jon Vick.

It's impossible to tell exactly when the meet will end, the director says, because he's unsure of how many youngsters will show up.

More than 15 teams from around the state have been invited to participate including Prescott, Ashfork, Camp Verde, Cottonwood, Flagstaff, Winslow, Round Valley, Snowflake and others.

Billed as the "Unofficial Northern Arizona Middle School Championships For Less Than First String Wrestlers," the tournament will be conducted in 16 individual weight classes from 68 to 225 pounds.

Vicks says tournament organizers are urging friendly competition and are hoping to pit individuals against one another who are of relatively equal ability.

Coaches have been asked to rank their wrestler's skills and abilities from one to five. Directors will then set up weight class matches based on those rankings.

That system,Vick says, gives every youngster the opportunity to be successful. There is no admission charge to the tournament.
