Want to check up on your doctor or a doctor you're thinking about seeing?
Then go on-line and check out www.docboard.org.
Dr. Donald Steele, a dermatologist who recently moved into an office at 313 S. Beeline Highway in Payson, said that when he came to town, people didn't know how to research his credentials.
Steele, who practiced in Newport Beach, Calif. for 25 years, began referring potential patients to the Web, where they can check his, or any Arizona doctor's, background.
With a few clicks of the mouse, people can find out where their doctors graduated, what licenses they have and what, if any, disciplinary actions have been taken against them.
"I've told a couple of doctors here about the program," he said. "In Arizona, there's one special problem -- the osteopathic examiners are separate from medical examiners."
The osteopaths are not listed on the Web site and any information on them will have to be retrieved "the old-fashioned way," by dialing 480-657-7703 or writing them at 9535 E. Doubletree Ranch Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85258-5539.
The State Board of Medical Examiners can be reached at 602-255-3751.
"But there's a problem getting through," he said. "You can mail them also, but that takes time." The address for the Arizona Board of Medical Examiners is 1651 E. Morten Ave., Suite 210, Phoenix, AZ 85020.
There is no charge for visiting the Web site, nor for being listed on it.
"Nor is there any influence," Steele said. "If they've had a disciplinary action, it's public record."
Steele said anyone who has a license to practice is on the Web site.
"More and more elderly people are going on-line," he said. "It's the information age, you know."
Steele can be reached at his e-mail address at: drsteele@ cybertrails.com or "the old-fashioned way" by phone at 472-7107.
