Leaving Flag In Dark A Community Disgrace

New Year's resolution: Since early November, I have called the town manager and (Payson's) flag chairman's attention to the lack of illumination on the large flag at the south end of town.

Payson, the flag capital of Arizona, is showing an unforgivable lack of respect due our nation's colors. I have contacted our congressional delegation, the chairman of the American Legion national flag committee, the V.F.W. flag chairman, the Daughters of the American Revolution, who are charged by Congress to monitor flag legislation, and several other authorities, including the protocol officer for the local Marine Corps League.

All of this information has been passed on to (Payson) Town Manager (Rich) Underkofler, a former Army officer, and to the flag committee chairman, who is married to a former Army veteran.

I find this a disgrace. It's disrespectful to our country and town. How soon we forget the 'I Pledge Allegiance to the Flag.'

Come on, let's get with the program for the new millennium.

Jack Sheahan, Payson
