In a twist of deja vu, the Lady Longhorns were eliminated from the Class 3A state tournament during Wednesday's quarterfinal play in Flagstaff, one game short of advancing to the final four at Phoenix Suns America West Arena.
Last season, almost the exact same scenario unfolded for the Horns.
The team was eliminated in the same round at the same location -- Walkup Sky Dome on the campus of Northern Arizona University.
In 1998, it was the Snowflake Lobos who put the crimp on Horn hopes.
This time, it was Monument Valley who eliminated Payson in a 77-59 victory.
Robertson leads scorers
In the loss, the Lady Horns were led by Stephanie Robertson's 13 points. Rheanna Martinez, Sidney Swartwood and Brandi Waugh finished with nine each.
The Horns reached the quarterfinal game with an opening round 59-50 win over the Wickenburg Wranglers Tuesday afternoon at Flagstaff High School.
In the win, Robertson turned in a career game with 20 points. Swartwood finished with 15.
Wickenburg entered the fray as the three-seed from the West Division.
The Horns -- who won the Central Division tournament last week -- represented the Central's No. 1 seed.
Monument Valley, the North runner-up, advanced to the quarterfinal game against Payson with an opening round 78-69 win over the Round Valley Lady Elks.
All that's left for the 1998-99 edition of the Lady Longhorns basketball squad is the traditional season-ending awards ceremony in which the All-Division selections will be announced.
The date and location of the event will be announced soon.
