The 25-member Tonto Apache Track and Field team debuted Valentine's Day at the Flagstaff Indoor Classic meet.

The team, in only its second year of existence, finished 16th in a 33-team field, competing against some of the best amateur track clubs in the state, including Arizona Blaze of Glendale, Scottsdale's Arizona Elite and the Arizona Cheetahs from Chandler.

Also competing were teams from Las Vegas, Albuquerque, San Bernadino and El Paso.

Team coach and founder Billy Joe Winchester was one of three gold-medal winners on the Tonto Apache squad.

Winchester, a former Arizona State University football player, who now serves as the tribe's recreation director, won the Masters Men's shot-put with a heave of 54 feet, 11 1/2 inches.

Among the bantam boys, Justin Johnson won the shot-put with a heave of 19 feet, 10 inches. Mike Waterman won the youth boys' shot-put with an effort of 33 feet, 8 1/2 inches.
