Billy Bob Hoyt's reputation as one of Payson's most promising young golfers was further enhanced last week when the 13-year-old played his way to a third-place finish in the Grand Canyon State Games.
At Karsten's Golf Club in Tempe, Hoyt earned the bronze with rounds of 43 on the front nine and 36 on the back nine. His tally of 79 was only one stroke behind the games' runner-up, and seven off par, which the champion shot.
The high points of the games, Hoyt said, were his back to back birdies on the back nine.
Only days after the GC Games wrapped up, Hoyt continued to battle the state's best by participating in the Phoenix City Open with 68 other youngsters.
Held on the Cave Creek Golf Course, Hoyt finished 21st, carding identical scores of 80 on both days of the tournament.
