Pikes Drown Clippers In Recreational Meet

Because it was a recreational swim meet, team scores weren't recorded when the Payson Pikes hosted the Cottonwood Clippers Saturday at Taylor Pool.

Unofficially, however, the Pikes were the dominant team, chalking up 33 first-place finishes among the 59 individual swimming events.

The Pikes' superiority was linked to the exploits of Hannah Eaton, Sean Ford, Sam Kenkel and Brooke Bennett.

All four Pike swimmers took first-place honors in the four events in which they participated -- butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle.

Ford competed in 6-years-and- under boys' class; Eaton in the 6-and-under girls; Kenkel in the 9-10 boys; and Bennett in the 13-14 girls.

Ford, Bennett and Kenkel also swam their way to first-place finishes in the 100-yard individual medley events.

In other Pike action, the team members participated in a lap-a-thon Wednesday in which swimmers gathered pledges and donations for the number of 25-yard laps they could swim in a designated amount of time. The 10-year-and-under members swam for 30 minutes. Those 11 years and older swam for one hour.

According to team coach Dani Hatch, the money generated will be used to pay out-of-town meet fees and to purchase training equipment and supplies.

Some of the equipment the coaching staff hopes to purchase includes kick boards, hand paddles, competition flags and starting blocks.

Several of the Pikes will be in action tomorrow, Saturday, at the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association state swim meet on the campus of Arizona State University in Tempe. The team's next home meet will be at 9 a.m. July 31 against the Prescott swim team.
