Payson folks will flip when they see what Dan Moriarty of Twin Oaks, Miss. is doing this weekend.
Starting with a seminar Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Green Valley Park, Moriarty --a martial arts instructor --will demonstrate a variety of martial arts techniques.
"I was visiting Payson two months ago, and some of the local kids knew I had trained with celebrities and martial arts people," Moriarty said. "I showed them a few moves and found there was probably enough interest in putting on a seminar."
Moriarty will return to Payson this weekend for the Friday night demonstration, and will follow that with an all-day seminar at the Payson Athletic Club.
In his 28 years of studying martial arts, Moriarty has trained in Kali (Filipino martial arts), boxing, Jun Fan kickboxing, Wing Chun, Chuan Fa, and Brazilian Jui-Jitsu, ground-fighting and weaponry.
He's also well-versed in the art of Jeet Kune Do -- the Bruce Lee concepts. These concepts include functional self-defense training drills, and physical attributes such as power, speed, timing, coordination, and body mechanics.
A fifth-degree black belt in kajukenbo, he's also been trained as a police defense tactics trainer.
The Friday night seminar is free. Saturday, participants of all ages and experience can join in on the seminar at the Payson Athletic Club for $25 -- a $45 savings off of Moriarty's normal price.
Seminar enrollment is limited, so register early by calling Moriarty's brother, Jim Moriarty, at 474-5751.
