Since the 1950s, the top track athletes in Arizona have gathered at the season-ending Luke Greenway Meet of Champions to battle for the rights to be called the state's best.
Invitees include the state champions in each event from the 1A through 5A track and field finales.
As the reigning Arizona State 3A champions, the Lady Longhorns qualified Rheanna Martinez, Stephanie Robertson and Brianna Marshall to the 1999 Luke Greenway held May 24 on the campus of Central High School in Phoenix. Jeremy Hoff and Mike Barker represented the Longhorn boys' team.
Robertson, a senior, ran her way to a gold medal in the 300 meter, turning in an ET of 46.9.
As a sophomore, Martinez was pitted mostly against older, more experienced competition but managed third places in the long jump (17 feet, 1/2 inch), triple jump (36 feet, 4 inches) and 100-meter dash (12.85).
In the 400 meters, Marshall finished fifth in 60.50.
Hoff, the Class 3A state champion in the shot-put, finished fourth in the event with a toss of 51 feet, 6 inches.
Barker, a 3A champion in the discus, finished fifth (no distance available).
With the prep season at an end, several of the athletes will turn their attention to the Junior Olympic circuit which culminates with the National Finals late this summer in Omaha, Neb. Several are also slated to participate in the Grand Canyon Games June 18 and 19 at various venues in Phoenix.
