On a cold, windy June 2 morning, 40 members of the Payson Men's Golf Association and 12 counterparts, representing Quailwood near Dewey, huddled on the first tee at Payson Golf Course, hoping rain would not force cancellation of an interclub match.
After a short drizzle just before the first tee time, the rain ended and the linksters completed the entire first round on a dry course.
In the low-gross-by-flight scoring, the winners were Frank Szakal (flight one; 75), Wayne Little (flight two; 77), Lee Kirtley (flight three; 84) and John Peel (flight four; 84).
In the low-net scoring, John Pauley and Tory Neal tied for the gold in flight one with identical cards of 69. Pauley was awarded first on a scorecard play-off.
Ralph Lindo captured flight two honors with a 71. Runner-up Skip Herring had a 73.
In flight three, Tom Harris finished with a 65 and in first place. Roland Kruse had a 66 and was second.
John Calderwood swung his way to top-gun honors in flight four with a 70. Don Nicholas was second.
Payson association members -- showing strong familiarity with the course -- took closest-to-the-pin honors on the four par 3 holes.
Prize money winners included Dick Strung (#5; 7 feet, 11 inches), Wayne Little (#8; 4 feet, 1 inch), Jim Jones (#14; 3 feet, 3 inches) and Tony Mularski (#17; 6 feet 1 inch).
