The final diamond shoot-out of the three-tournament Rim Country Senior Softball Championship Series will be played this weekend on the Rumsey II field.
Three teams -- Apollo, Falcons and Blasters -- are dead-knotted for the overall championship based on their performances in two tournaments held earlier this spring in Payson.
Apollo is a Phoenix-based team but its roster sports two local players -- Dick Erickson and Danny Martinez.
Like Apollo, the Fountain Hills Falcons have local ties, with Payson residents Tom Neblett, Billy Joe Winchester and Dave Crowell on the team.
The Blasters field a Phoenix-only team.
According to Crowell, the series director, there are other teams in the tournament field which could play a role in determining the tournament leader.
One of those might be the Prescott Miners, says Crowell. "They are not in contention for the championship, but they are coming to town with only one thought in mind and that is to be the spoiler and knock a couple of the contending teams out."
Payson's senior team, the Grays, is not entered in the tournament but will play an exhibition game at 6:45 p.m. Saturday evening against the Sun City 60's.
A schedule of 10 games of round robin play tips off at 7:30 a.m. Saturday and continues until about 6 p.m. The results of the round robin will seed the teams into a double-elimination tournament which begins at 8:30 a.m. Sunday. The championship game is slated for 3:30 p.m. that same day.
Crowell issued an invitation for Rim country softball fans to join in on the festivities.
"Come out and see some of the best senior softball," he said. "Admission is free and a refreshment stand will be open."
