With a 4-2 record, Payson's first-year entry in the Arizona Prep Summer Baseball League is more than holding its own.
The local team comprises teenage players who were members of the PHS team that last spring won the Arizona State championship.
Also on the squad are younger athletes with jayvee and freshmen prep experience.
In Payson's most recent encounter, played June 18 in Payson, the local squad swept a doubleheader from Maryvale, 16-3 and 9-4. In the opening win, Bryan Zumbro -- who will be a senior next fall -- paced the victory with a grand-slam home run.
Zumbro was the winning pitcher in the Longhorns' state championship win over Cactus Shadows in early May.
Only two days prior to the sweep over Maryvale, Kacy Parker, normally a catcher, pitched Payson to a 16-4 triumph over Maricopa at the Papago Sports Complex in Scottsdale.
In the win, left-handed hitter Cade Bradley lifted a booming home run over the right field fence. Bradley's younger brother, Ky, was the winning pitcher in the opening win over Maryvale.
In other action this season, Payson has lost to Tempe, 7-6, and Fountain Hills, 8-7, but whipped Phoenix Christian, 16-3.
The team returns to action today, Tuesday, against homestanding Fountain Hills. Game time is 7 p.m. After playing Maryvale at 5 p.m. July 7 at Papago, the local team returns to Payson, 10 a.m., July 10 in a doubleheader against Tempe.
The season wraps up at 10 a.m., July 17, against Maricopa in Payson.
