Haught Sentencing May Be March 12

A mitigation hearing for Roy George Haught, the Star Valley businessman convicted last month of negligent homicide and aggravated assault in the death of Jim Cooper of Strawberry, has been set for 10 a.m. March 12 in Globe.

Haught's sentencing hearing was set for March 8, but the March 12 mitigation hearing will be held instead.

Judge Edd Dawson will consider character evidence during the hearing at the Gila County Courthouse before setting Haught's prison sentence, which can range from five to 15 years. Dawson said during an earlier interview that he is likely to set the sentence at that time.

Haught was convicted in the beating death of Cooper, a local auto mechanic, following a Dec. 14, 1997 altercation outside Cooper's home in Strawberry. Cooper died from his injuries in a Valley hospital six days after the fight.

Haught has been transferred from the Gila County Jail in Globe to the Gila County Jail in Payson to await sentencing.
