Three junior high boys from Pine-Strawberry School District face felony charges for allegedly sexually assaulting one or more female classmates on school grounds.
Gila County Sheriff's investigators have charged two 13-year-old boys with unlawful imprisonment, aggravated assault and sex abuse. The third boy, who is 14, is charged with sex abuse and assault.
Specific details of the alleged incident were not available at press time.
The boys were suspended from the school for 10 days last month after a third party notified school officials about the alleged incidents.
The P-S Elementary School Board held disciplinary hearings for the boys last week to consider further punishment. The board's decision, however, was made privately in executive session at the request of the boys' parents and will not be made public, in accordance with state law.
In light of the allegations, the district's five-member school board will consider expanding the school's annual sex-ed program to include instruction on appropriate girl-boy relationships and coping with peer pressure.
The board will consider the curriculum change during its regular monthly meeting at 4 p.m. today (Tuesday) in the school conference room.
The criminal complaints against the boys have been forwarded to the Gila County Attorney's office for review. Prosecutors may alter or amend the charges before referring the complaints to the Gila County Juvenile Probation Department.
