Dennis Jones -- the man who attracted the attention of three area law enforcement agencies and the Payson Special Response Team Feb. 26 when he holed up in the Charleston Inn -- is a free man this week.
Last month, witnesses saw Jones acting erratically while he was a guest at the motel on South Beeline. He was alleged to have smuggled a five-gallon can of gasoline into his room.
After a 90-minute standoff, the 47-year-old Strawberry man walked out the front door and was downed by three beanbags fired at him by officers armed with shotguns.
"He voluntarily committed himself for a psychiatric evaluation," said Payson Police Det. Chris Haack. "He has subsequently been released, and his whereabouts are unknown."
Haack said that although the incident is still under investigation, he doesn't expect to file criminal charges against the man.
