Aps Offers Reward On Vandalism

Vandals who used a 21,000-volt overhead electrical distribution line for target practice Thursday knocked out power for an hour to 3,000 homes and businesses in Tonto Basin.

The power went off-line at 11:15 a.m.
Arizona Public Service crews found the damage near the entrance to the 76 Ranch south of Gisela and had it repaired within the hour.

If a line is shot down, it could be deadly to people on the ground, APS Payson Regional Manager Jim Spencer said, but the real problem is the reliability of the line.

The power company is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of these or any other APS vandals, Spencer said.

Anyone with information about this incident can call the Gila County Sheriff's Department at 474-2208 or the Payson Police Department at 474-5177.
