The Lady Longhorn volleyball team will advance to the Class 3A state tournament as the second seed from the East division and will play 4 p.m. Thursday at Centennial High School in Phoenix.
At press time, coach Sue Weems was unsure of the opening round opponent but believed it would be the third seed from the South, or Copper, division.
An opening round win would push the Lady Horns into a quarterfinals game to be played at 8 p.m. Thursday evening, also at Centennial.
"If we get to that game, we would probably play Fountain Hills who is number-one in the Copper region," Weems said.
The state tournament, to be contested over the course of three days, will wrap up Saturday evening.
The Horns earned the runner-up state berth after finishing second in the East division tournament held last week in Snowflake.
Weems' charges opened the division shoot-out with 2-0 wins over Holbrook and Show Low before falling to East Champion Snowflake 2-0 in the gold-medal finale.
"Everyone is doing a good job," the coach said, citing the efforts of the entire squad. "They are playing as a team."
At the conclusion of the tournament, officials and coaches announced the selection of Payson's Rheanna Martinez as the East Division "Player of the Year."
As the Horns' starting middle hitter, Martinez is just a junior. In addition to excelling in volleyball, she is a standout in basketball and track and field.
