A Lady Longhorn volleyball team might some year play its way out of the state tournament quarterfinals bracket, but it didn't happen this season.
The Lady Horns preseason goal of playing at least three games into the tournament ended Thursday evening at Peoria Centennial High with a 2-1 loss to Fountain Hills.
Last year, under former coach Steve Konvalin, the Lady Horns also reached the quarterfinals -- then a school record for achievement -- but ere eliminated.
New coach Sue Weems, who replaced Konvalin at the onset of the season, led her team to a runner-up finish in the East Division and a two-seed into the state tournament which began Thursday afternoon.
In the opening round, the Lady Horns edged past South division representative Coolidge, 2-1.
Prior to the match, Weems predicted her team would probably defeat Coolidge and go on to play Fountain Hills. The two schools developed a strong rivalry when both were members of the Central division from 1996-98.
Fountain advanced to the quarterfinals against the Lady Horns by virtue of an opening round victory over Window Rock.
After whipping Payson, Fountain Hills went on to lose a semifinal match to Kayenta Monument Valley 2-1. MV won the 3A crown defeating Snowflake 2-0 Saturday evening at Grand Canyon College.
