Youth league all-star football action comes to the Rim country Saturday when celestial squads from the East and West divisions of the Central Arizona Youth Football Association battle one another on the Payson High field.
It will be the first time in CAYFA annals that such post-season games will be played.
At 10 a.m., the East Minor League All-Stars, coached by Mark Henning, will take on the West squad. Local coach Jimbo Armstrong will lead the East Majors into action against the West at noon. At 2 p.m. the seniors all-star teams clash.
During regular season play, Henning coached the Payson Cardinals and Armstrong coached the Payson Eagles entries in CAYFA.
The players on the all-star teams were chosen in a voting of coaches at the conclusion of the regular season.
Following their selection to the star squads, the players met Saturday in Camp Verde to practice for the upcoming clash.
Admission is free to the all-star games and refreshments will be available.
The Payson teams in CAYFA celebrated the culmination of a highly successful season with an awards banquet held Nov. 8 in the Tonto Apache Tribe gymnasium.
According to local CAYFA president Eric Santana, over 500 people attended the affair.
In addition to awarding each young player a trophy for their efforts, businesses who sponsored local teams received plaques.
"Mazatzal Casino General Manager James McDermott accepted a plaque in appreciation of all they and the Tonto Apache Tribe do for the league," Santana said.
