As the Arizona State Champion of the Elks Youth Soccer shoot, seven-year-old Jaycee Boll earned the right to advance to the Western Regional Championships held Nov. 13 in St. George, Utah.
There, she would have competed against state champions from California, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah for the privilege of participating in the national championships.
The youngster, however, turned down the opportunity to compete in the regionals in order to participate in a family wedding.
Her parents, Brian and Jennie, asked Jaycee which event -- the wedding or the soccer shoot -- she wanted to enter.
After much head scratching, soul searching and family discussions, the Payson Elementary School student chose the wedding, Brian said.
The youngster's road to the state crown began in Payson early last fall when she won the Rim country gold-medal title. Weeks later, also in Payson, we ran away with the district competition.
On Oct. 10 at the Phoenix West Elks Lodge, Jaycee was head and shoulders above the other four regional champions.
"She scored 36 points and the others scored, 11, 11 and 12," Brian said.
Jaycee honed her soccer skills as a member of the Flash team in the local youth soccer league.
