Payson Town Councilmember Ray Schum, who underwent open heart surgery in Phoenix last week, said he's feeling strong enough to continue his campaign for mayor.
"I wasn't sure at first," he said Monday, "but if my recovery is as good as the doctors are predicting, then I'll be able to do it. I'll continue with my plan to campaign, because I want to be the mayor of Payson."
In preparation for his run for mayor, Schum went to Phoenix last week for a physical, "because," he said, "I wanted to tell the people I was in good shape."
What he found instead was that his arteries were clogged, and he needed immediate five-way bypass surgery.
He underwent surgery Tuesday, and by Thursday, he said he was up and walking around the hospital.
With a prognosis for a full recovery, Schum said he's looking forward to spending the holidays at home.
"We're going to have a nice, quiet Thanksgiving," he said. "It will be a nice, quiet holiday."
