Happy Thanksgiving. I hope you and your family enjoyed the day and its traditions. I also hope that you gave thanks for the many blessings in your lives.
As we each give thanks and celebrate with our families, it is a good time to be thankful for the friends and people we have in our lives.
I'm thankful for having known Odie Hosler of Strawberry. Odie is being memorialized by the Rim Country Kiwanis Club Saturday, Dec. 4 during its second annual prayer breakfast.
The breakfast will be held from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Pine Community Center in the Kiwanis building, which will be renamed the Odie Hosler Memorial Hall. Randy Kaufman will sing.
Odie's friends are welcome to attend this special dedication and prayer breakfast.
Last call for arts and crafts
The Pine-Strawberry Arts-n-Crafts Guild will be open one last weekend in the arts and crafts room in the Pine Community Center.
Shoppers will find hand-crafted gift ideas there from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting.
Christmas tree auction
The annual Christmas Tree Auction is planned for 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4 in the Cultural Hall at the Pine Community Center. The lighting of the community Christmas tree will precede the event in front of the community center.
Following the lighting, live pine trees decorated by Pine-Strawberry School students and staff will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. There will be carolers and a special guest from up north. Bring your cameras.
At 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, students from preschool through fifth-grade will take center stage in the school gym to perform one of the community's most endearing holiday traditions -- a holiday concert.
Make a date with someone special for the evening. You don't have to have kids in school to appreciate these shiny-faced performers who may sing slightly off key. A strong showing will encourage and support. Everyone is welcome and it's absolutely free.
The Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce is once again sponsoring a Residential Christmas Decorating Contest. To enter, you must have your home decorated by Friday, Dec. 10. You also need to write down your name, address, subdivision, city and phone number, and mail it to HCR 1 Box 676, Strawberry, AZ 85544. Judging will start at 6 p.m. Dec. 10. For more information, call Rose Harper at 476-3000 or Dianne Mitchell at 476-2766.
Even if you don't enter the contest, get in the holiday spirit and make our community stand out. If your home is decorated, please leave the lights on each night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. so all of us can enjoy them.
