There's no season-ending girls' soccer state championship tournament in the Class 3A conference, so the Lady Longhorns will settle for this week's Camp Verde Invitational as their gold-medal finale.
PHS coach Linda Gibson said she would like to see some type of girls' state tournament -- like boys' teams have to decide an eventual champion --but until that happens, the shoot-out in Camp Verde will have to make do.
At press time, Gibson was unsure which of the eight teams entered in the fray would be the Horns' opponent when play opens at 9 a.m. Thursday.
"I think we will be seeded fourth or fifth, so will probably play either Sedona or Camp Verde," Gibson said.
Action will continue in the single-elimination tournament Friday, concluding Saturday afternoon with the championship game.
The Lady Horns will enter the march fresh off a 4-1 shellacking of the Snowflake Lobos Oct. 16 at Payson's Rumsey Park.
The win upped the team's 1999 credentials to 10-4-1 overall.
In the triumph, left winger Ashley Hollobaugh proved to be too much offense for the Lobos to handle, scoring all of Payson's goals.
"She played really well," the coach said. The coach also praised the play of freshman goal Trista Carlton who has excelled this year despite her lack of varsity experience.
