The Payson Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting two of its more popular events -- coed volleyball and punt, pass and kick competition -- during the month of September.
The first on the agenda is the adult fall coed volleyball league, which will hold its registration Sept. 7 -17. Play will begin in October. The league is slated to wrap up in late November with a postseason tournament.
P&R officials intend to field both competitive and recreation divisions with a four-team minimum in each division. Entry fee is $150.
Recreation Coordinator Beth Kreider is strongly urging youngsters who intend on participating in the NFL Gatorade Punt, Pass and Kick competition to register before event check-in time of 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sept. 23. Registration may be completed in advance at the P&R offices located at Green Valley Park.
The actual competition will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.on the Payson High School baseball field
The event is free and open to boys and girls ages 8 to 15. The entrants are grouped according to age and sex. They compete for distance and accuracy in punting, passing and kicking from a tee.
The top finishers from each of the eight age groups of the Payson competition earn the right to advance to the sectional shootout to be held next month. In past years, the sectionals have been held in Prescott Valley. This year's site has yet to be decided.
The winners of the sectional competitions from throughout Arizona will have their scores compared with other sectional champions. The top five scorers advance to the Arizona Cardinals Team Championships, to be held at the Cardinals vs. Eagles NFL game Dec. 5 in Sun Devil Stadium.
