The registration deadline for the 1999 Hoop-It-Up competition has been extended to 5 p.m. Monday.
The event, held Sept. 25 and 26 at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix, has traditionally drawn several teams from the Rim country. This year, more than 800 teams from around the state are expected to compete.
In previous years, players have had to call their own fouls, but referees will be on every court during this tournament.
Entries for three- or four-person teams -- male, female and coed -- are $104. Call 888-997-7529 for more information.
Punt, pass and kick
Town Recreation Coordinator Beth Kreider is recommending that all youths planning to participate in the NFL Gatorade Punt, Pass & Kick competition preregister before the event.
PP&K begins at 6 p.m. Sept. 23, and registration may be completed at the Parks and Rec offices located at Green Valley Park.
The event is open to both boys and girls ages eight to 15.
Check-in will be held from 5:30 to 6 p.m. on the day of the event, which will be contested on the Payson High School baseball field.
The competition allows youngsters to showcase their talents in punting, passing and place-kicking with scores based on distance and accuracy.
The top finishers from each of the eight age groups will advance to sectional competition; the top five scorers from the pool of sectional champions advance to the Arizona Cardinals team championships to be held at the Cardinals vs. Philadelphia Eagles game Dec. 5 at Sun Devil Stadium.
