New Deadline Gives Players More Time To Hoop-It-Up

The registration deadline for the 1999 Hoop-It-Up competition has been extended to 5 p.m. Monday.

The event, held Sept. 25 and 26 at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix, has traditionally drawn several teams from the Rim country. This year, more than 800 teams from around the state are expected to compete.

In previous years, players have had to call their own fouls, but referees will be on every court during this tournament.

Entries for three- or four-person teams -- male, female and coed -- are $104. Call 888-997-7529 for more information.

Punt, pass and kick

Town Recreation Coordinator Beth Kreider is recommending that all youths planning to participate in the NFL Gatorade Punt, Pass & Kick competition preregister before the event.

PP&K begins at 6 p.m. Sept. 23, and registration may be completed at the Parks and Rec offices located at Green Valley Park.

The event is open to both boys and girls ages eight to 15.

Check-in will be held from 5:30 to 6 p.m. on the day of the event, which will be contested on the Payson High School baseball field.

The competition allows youngsters to showcase their talents in punting, passing and place-kicking with scores based on distance and accuracy.

The top finishers from each of the eight age groups will advance to sectional competition; the top five scorers from the pool of sectional champions advance to the Arizona Cardinals team championships to be held at the Cardinals vs. Philadelphia Eagles game Dec. 5 at Sun Devil Stadium.

Last chance

Today, Friday, is the final day for registration for the Town of Payson Adult Fall Coed Volleyball League. Registration may be completed at the P&R offices at Green Valley Park before 5 p.m.. The fee is $150 per team. All games will be played in October and November. A final tournament will be scheduled.

Youth soccer

There are still a few openings on the youth soccer league, said Town Recreation Coordinator Beth Kreider.

Youth soccer is for children ages 4 through 9 years, and the league is already in progress. Games are played in September through October.

Kreider said participants will receive T-shirts, and are thrown a season-ending pizza party at the end of October.

Junior bowling

Payson Bowl's junior league, which is open to children 11 years old and under, starts Sept. 22. The league, which will assign four bowlers to a team, will bowl at 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays and costs $3 a week per child. Children who bowl only one game will only be charged $1.50 a week.

Children are asked to bring $10.50 -- $7.50 sanction and a $3 bowling fee -- to the first week for sign up. Children who only plan to bowl one game will be charged $9.
