A clash involving two Payson teams, the Cardinals and the Bears on the minor division, was one of the highlights of Saturday's Central Arizona Youth Football Association play at Payson High School.
After battling to a scoreless tie in the first quarter, coach Mark Henning's Card squad scored touchdowns in the final three stanzas to run away with a 22-0 victory.
In other action, the Payson Eagles whipped the Raiders 22-6, the Senior Cardinals lost to the Wildcats 32-0, The Buccaneers were out-scored by the Bulldogs 20-8 and the Cowboys fell to the Vipers 28-18.
Payson's out of town foes-- the Vipers, Wildcats and Bulldogs -- all represented the community of Camp Verde which sent a sizable contingent of vocal fans to back their teams.
In the minor Cardinals win over the Bears, Henning cited defense as controlling the game.
The Cards first lit up the scoreboard on a 4th down 25-yard pass from Billy Herrin to Chris Eagar.
Herrin got into the scoring act again in third quarter on a 30-yard TD run.
The win ups the Cards' season mark to 2-0 with an 8:30 a.m. encounter Saturday in Camp Verde next on the agenda. The Payson squad is slated to take on the Vipers.
If the Card coaching staff wished to scout the Vipers, they had the opportunity Saturday during the Cowboy's 18-point loss to the CV squad.
Payson's three touchdowns were scored by Shane Tuer, Cody York and Robert McElhiney.
Coaches cited Joseph Ralston, Troy Brown and York for their defensive play.
In the Eagles triumph over the Raiders, coaches cited the play of Pete Hargis, Josh Blalock and Cash Armstrong.
The Payson teams playing in the Central Arizona Youth Football League continue play Oct. 2 on PHS field.
