When Town Recreation Coordinator Beth Kreider said the NFL/Gatorade Punt, Pass & Kick contest would be held the evening of Sept 23 "rain or shine," she had little idea of the magnitude of the torrential downpour that would drench the Rim country that day.
When the playing surface on the Payson High School field went underwater, Kreider was forced to cancel the competition and look for another date that would be acceptable to the school district, the P&R Department and the many youngsters who want to participate.
Early this week, Kreider and P&R officials settled Oct. 8 as the make-up date. A registration period will begin at 4:30 p.m. on the baseball field, however Kreider urges everyone interested to pre-register at the P&R offices located at Green Valley Park. Currently, about 25 youngsters have signed up.
The actual competition will begin at 5 p.m. and continue until 7:30 p.m. on both the Payson High School softball and baseball fields.
The 8-9- and 10-11-year-old groups will compete on the softball field. The 12-13- and 14-15-year-old groups will compete on the baseball field.
The competition allows boys and girls to show their football skills in punting, passing and place kicking. Scores are based on distance and accuracy.
The winners of the Payson competition will advance to a sectional competition. Winners there can advance to the state championships, which will be held Dec. 5 during half-time of the Arizona Cardinals vs. Philadelphia Eagles football game.
Only a few years ago, Payson had a local and sectional champion, 14-year-old Cody Baldwin, who advanced to the state finals.
For more information, call the P&R Department at 474-5242, ext. 7.
Because the Punt, Pass & Kick competition will now be held on two fields Oct. 8, officials are asking for volunteers to help keep score and measure distances during the event. Contact the P&R Department if you'd like to help.
Registration for play in the third- and fourth-grade division of the town-sponsored youth basketball league began Sept. 27 and will continue until Oct. 8.
Registration may be completed at the P&R offices located at Green Valley Park. The fee is $20, which includes a T-shirt, minimum of seven games and a pizza party at the end of the season. Games will begin in the first week of November and are played most Saturdays. A few, however, might be played weekdays after school.
Registration for the fifth- and sixth-grade league will be Nov. 1 through 12. The seventh- and eighth-grade league registers Jan. 3 through 14.
Those who register after any of the deadlines for their age groups will be placed on teams only if space permits.
