The Lady Longhorn softball team began play this morning in the most prestigious tournament of the regular season.
At 9:45 a.m., Payson debuted on the Snowflake Little League field against the Winslow Bulldogs.
Action for Payson continued at 11:30 a.m. against Ganado and at 4:45 p.m. against Joseph City.
Competing in Pool B of the 2000 3A East tournament conducted in Snowflake and Taylor, the Lady Horns can advance to the championship bracket of the tournament by winning their pool. The gold-medal round will be played tomorrow at the Snowflake City Park.
Should the Lady Horns finish as runners-up in today's pool play, they would be seeded into a silver-medal tournament tomorrow at Taylor City Park.
Third-place finishers play other third-place finishers Saturday at Snowflake Junior High.
The four teams who finished last in each of the pools -- A, B, C and D -- will play one another in a consolation tournament Saturday at the Snowflake Little League Park.
In Pool A are Alchesay, Snowflake, St. Johns and Sedona. Pool C includes Mogollon Holbrook, Chino Valley and Blue Ridge. Page, Round Valley, Show Low and Tuba City make up Pool D.
