Ray Schum, who takes office as Payson's mayor June 8, has resigned his position as president of the Payson Economic Development Corporation effective May 1.
Since the EDC isn't a town committee, Schum is under no obligation to quit the post he's held for two years.
But, he said, "I thought (resigning) was the best thing to do.
"I've told the EDC people all along that I intended to resign if I got elected," he said, "and as a group, we all thought it was the right course of action to take.
"I ran on the principal of economic development, and I'll support every effort the EDC makes," Schum said. "I think I might be even more influential as the mayor in offering that support .
"Also, (newly elected town councilmembers) Barbara Brewer, Dick Wolfe and Bryan Siverson all support economic development from their positions. So I think we're going to be heading in that direction no matter what."
