In Fountain Hills Parks and Recreation Department-sponsored senior softball league play, the Payson Grays upped their record to 6-4 with twin wins over the homestanding Rockers.
The opener of the twin bill -- which was played April 12 -- proved to be no contest as the Grays ran away with a 22-8 triumph.
The second contest was more hotly contested, but the Grays managed to hang on for a 15-9 triumph, Grays player/coach Ron Maksymowski said.
The key to the wins, Maksymowski said, was "stellar defense in both games highlighted by Earl Davis' move to shortstop and Duane Moerder's shift to second base."
The outfield of Ralph Bossert, Corb Corbin, Frank Adams, Vern Stearns and Walt Knasick committed just one error, the player/coach said.
Offensively, the Grays were paced by the hitting of Dick Johnson, Dan Rebai, Bossert, Stearns and Knasick.
Johnson was the winning pitcher in both games.
The Grays have a bye April 19 in regular season play and will not return to action until April 26.
Maksymowski asks that any seniors wishing to play on the Grays team call him at 474-6624.
Maksymowski also said he, local Parks and Rec Director Bill Schwind and Milo Bonnin from Fountain Hills P&R are in the process of setting up a summer senior league in Payson.
