Ira Gibel's letter to the editor in the April 28 Payson Roundup hit a chord with me. My father was a music and math teacher in Tombstone Union High School for many years. Even in those days, with limited funds in our state, his music department and the sports department were well funded for extracurricular activities and all departments had teachers who were paid equitable salaries.
Today, when funding is at least as available for teachers, we are niggardly in our remuneration of all teachers, let alone teachers of extracurricular activities. There isn't a parent in this area who doesn't value his/her children and who doesn't realize a correlation between teachers' salaries and excellent teachers. Teachers are incredibly valuable to the future of Arizona.
