Three members of the Tonto Apache Track and Field Team recently returned home after impressive showings at the Junior Olympic National Track and Field Tournament at the University of Buffalo in Buffalo, N.Y.
The trio of Mikey Waterman, Anthony Johnson and Charley Lopez acquitted themselves very well according to coach Billy Joe Winchester, who accompanied the boys to New York.
"I think jet lag affected them a little, but these three kids did a fantastic job," Winchester said.
Lopez, 11, finished 11th in the discus in the midget division.
Waterman, 13, scratched in the discus, but took 19th place in the shot-put in the youth-boys division. Johnson, 13, finished 25th in the javelin event, also in the youth-boys division.
A lot of competition
Over 6,000 athletes competed in the tournament, with 48 qualifying for each event.
"Considering there were 48 kids in each event, we were very pleased with our showing," Winchester said. "Plus we had a lot of fun and got to meet a lot of different people."
To qualify for the national tournament, they had to finish first, second, or third at both the Arizona Junior Olympics and the 10-state Regional Junior Olympics. Their goal for next year is to qualify for the world meet that will be held in Hungary.
