Ode To Mary

The world is a sadder place today

Because my friend Mary Burt has left us.

But there will always be a place in my heart

Where she will live forever.

I knew this lady for almost 6 years.

She was my next-door neighbor.

She was never without a smile and a quip.

Always full of good humor.

I'd walk out my back door and yell "Hey hon!"

And she'd come to the fence to meet me;

And we'd talk and gossip and laugh and kid,

And poke gentle fun at Floyd and Chico.

Mary was the yard-sale queen.

Always finding the very best bargains;

With child-like joy and glee

She'd show me her latest treasures.

Her house was always welcoming.

Beautifully furnished

With love and taste and lots of nifty things

That showed her sense of fun in earnest.

I never knew Mary to complain of fuss

Even when her body failed her.

What I remember most is her clear blue eyes

From which her beautiful soul looked out at me.

I am so very sad that my friend is gone.

I am so sad that I will no longer see her.

Or laugh with her over the fence

Or giggle over her latest bargain score.

But I know one day we'll see each other again,

In the sweet bye-and-bye;

We'll hug each other again and then set off to have fun

In that great yard-sale in the sky!

I love you and miss you, Mary!

Much aloha, dear friend
