Council Votes For Rodeo Shade

Payson's new rodeo arena will be ready for the Gary Hardt Memorial Rodeo in May, but seating could be a problem, Parks and Recreation Director Bill Schwind told the Payson Town Council Thursday during its regular meeting.

The town, which had permanent and portable bleachers at the old arena site in Rumsey Park, was only able to move 1,160 seats about half the number available at Rumsey Park to the new site on the south edge of town.

And now the town is having trouble buying more bleachers.

"We went out to bid for bleachers and didn't get any response," Schwind told the council.

Schwind told the council that it would cost 84 cents a seat to rent bleachers and that two more sets are needed, which would provide an additional 800 seats for events.

Although the council batted around the idea of renting bleachers for the multievent center, it took no action. Instead, the council voted five to two to allow Schwind to ask for bids for a cover for the bleachers.
