Town-Sponsored Recreation

Spring youth soccer registration for boys and girls ages 8 to 15 is under way at the Payson Parks and Recreation Department. Sign-up will continue through Feb. 25.

Recreation coordinator Beth Kreider says registration is brisk, forcing a need for more coaches.

If enough volunteers don't step forward to fill the coaching vacancies, Kreider's only option will be to call on the assistance of parents.

Games begin in mid-March and will be played Saturdays mostly, on the Rumsey Park soccer field. However, with lights slated to be erected at nearby ballfields, some games should be played at those locations during evening hours in April and May.

The registration fee is $20, which includes a team T-shirt and team pizza party.

Kreider advises parents not to wait until after the late registration period --after Feb. 25 -- because athletes will then be placed on teams as space permits. The fee also increases to $25.

Youth wrestling

In other Parks and Rec offerings, the 2000 edition of the "Learn to Wrestle With the Best" camp held its first session Tuesday with about 30 youngsters attending.

Kreider says camp coaches will accept up to 10 more athletes provided they register by today (Feb. 18).

Camp sessions will be held from 3:15 to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday until March 9. All are conducted in the wrestling room in the PHS gymnasium. The camp is open to youngsters in grades two through six. Registration fee is $15, which includes a camp T-shirt.

Bass attack

Roosevelt fisherman Chi-Chi Chavez finished ninth at the AllStar Bass Pro-Am Invitational held Feb. 14 at Apache Lake.

Chavez pocketed $335 for boating 11.41 pounds of fish.

Many of the winning anglers fished crankbaits on mainlake points with about 50 feet of water under their boats. Some used in-line spinners and drop-shot rigs on mainlake points and reefs in 10 to 30 feet of water.

Horns acknowledged

The first high school baseball rankings of the season are out and the defending state champion Longhorns (23-9 last year) are ranked fifth.

Ahead of the Horns are: 1) Globe; 2) Safford; 3) Snowflake; and 4) Seton Catholic.

The rankings are compiled by the Arizona Baseball Coaches Association.
