Tonto Apache Track Squad Kicks Off 2000 Spring Season

The Tonto Apache Track and Field team, which last summer sent three athletes to the national finals, kicked off the 2000 amateur spring season last weekend at the Flagstaff Indoor Classic.

No team scores were kept, but TAT&F coaches Ivan Smith and Calvin Johnson say the squad performed well in the 43-team field despite the absence of several promising athletes.

Team members Jordan Hinton, Keshia Waterman and Daniel Bunting were out of town and Chris Engle was injured, coaches say.

The most acclaimed efforts on the Tonto team were turned in by Michael Waterman and Colten Curtis.

In the youth boys' division of the shot-put, Waterman turned in a gold-medal heave of over 30 feet.

In the intermediate boys' shot-put, Curtis won with a throw of 31 feet, 3 inches.
