Played Independence Day at Rumsey Park and Payson High School, Westwood Auto of Apache Junction defeated Globe Chalos 20-19 and 18-13 to win the championship of the six-team co-ed tournament.

Payson's 12-pak squad finished third, losing to Chalos 6-5 in the semi-finals. 12-pak finished with a 2-2 record.

The Rim country's other entry, Waste Management, compiled a 1-4 record and was eliminated in the consolation finals by Phoenix's Shades of Brown.

In men's division play July 1, the Globe Merchants played their way to the tournament title, whipping Payson's State Farm 17-7 in the gold-medal showdown.

State Farm, a longtime softball powerhouse in the Rim country, had to settle for runner-up honors.

The Insurance Men opened the seven-team tournament on an auspicious note, losing to the Diablos 18-8. SF rebounded to whip Shades of Brown 8-3, Cobwebs 6-2, Globe Merchants 18-17, Diablos 18-15 before losing the finale to Globe.

In the three-team women's tournament also contested July 1, the squads played an early morning round-robin for seeding privileges into a single elimination tournament.

Because each team finished 1-1, Pettet the tournament director seeded the teams into the elimination bracket based on runs scored.

In game one, Ducks Unlimited whipped Turn Two 14-3 to advance to the championship round against Yuma. In that clash, Yuma played its way to the title, upsetting DU 15-7.

Both Turn Two and DU were Payson-area teams.

Down the road

With the Independence Day Firecracker Slow-Pitch Softball Tournaments now a memory, local sports buffs have turned their attention to the Payson ASA Labor Day Classic Tournament.

To be held Sept 3-4, the diamond shoot-out is the Rim country's largest tournament of the year.

Tournament Director Teddy Pettet said he expects at least 20 men's teams, 14 coed squads and eight women's team to participate this year.

Tournament play will include men's C and D divisions and upper and lower brackets in the coed. Only one women's division will be played.

All teams are guaranteed at least three games.

The entry fee is $165 for ASA registered teams. For teams not affiliated with the ASA, a $20 registration fee will be charged.
