Brothers Jody and Saul Palomo were booked into Gila County Jail Wednesday night on robbery and assault charges following the alleged beating of a 48-year-old man and his 36-year-old girlfriend.
The man was admitted to Payson Regional Medical Center where he remains in intensive care. The woman was treated at the scene of the alleged attack and released.
Payson Police Det. Chris Haack, the female victim told police the following:
"They were all out for an evening of recreation," Haack said. "Sometime around 10 p.m., they left one drinking establishment and were heading north on the Beeline Highway."
Saul Palomo, 26, was driving the car and his brother Jody, 31, was sitting in the backseat. The woman was sitting in the middle of the front seat, and her boyfriend was sitting on the passenger side of the front seat.
"As they were driving, the male victim flicked his cigarette out of the driver's window, right in front of the driver's face," Haack said. "This started the problems."
While the driver and the man tried slugging each other in the car, Palomo pulled into the entrance of Bank One, and the fight spilled into the parking lot, Haack said.
He said the two victims were trying to get away when Saul threw the man down and began severely beating him.
"The woman then tried to pull Saul off her boyfriend, when Jody grabbed her and threw her down, kicking and hitting her," the detective said. "He then walked over to the other victim and took money out of his pocket before the two fled."
The man went to the hospital with injuries to his mouth, teeth and face. The woman was treated for minor injuries to her left wrist and ankle.
Officers later captured the Palomos, who were each charged with aggravated assault and aggravated robbery. They each remain in jail in lieu of a $5,000 bond.
