Rim Country Middle School Athletic Director Bill Bowling has set the start date and practice times for Mavericks 7th- and 8th-grade football.
Practices officially kick off Aug. 7 and will be held weekdays from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Before an athlete can participate, however, he must have all the clearance forms including a physical examination on file in the RCMS office. Also, the $20 participation fee must be paid.
The teams open the season Aug. 24 against Capps Heber School.
Slated to coach the 7th-grade teams are Dave Blalock and Ned Schall. Blalock, a Payson police officer, is a longtime local youth league coach. As a sixth-grade teacher at RCMS, Schall has coached on both the middle- and high-school levels.
Local businessman Scott Crabdree, also a veteran youth coach, will head the 8th-grade program. Bowling is still searching for a second 8th-grade coach.
Gridiron fans shouldn't forget to stop by Payson High School football field after 5 p.m. today or during daylight hours tomorrow.
High school summer passing league action will be fast and furious with Mesa Red Mountain, Glendale Mountain Ridge and Canyon State Academy (formerly Arizona Boys Ranch) in town to work on their passing games.
One of the coaches escorting Red Mountain to the league is former PHS head coach Dan Dunn who will be fresh off sponsoring an athletic/cultural exchange to Australia.
PHS first-year coach Mike Wheelis anticipates Bradshaw Mountain and Phoenix Christian could also show up for the league.
There is no admission charge for spectators.
